Garage door openers (“motors”) have a typical service life of 10-15 years for a daily-use residential door. The most common Adelaide brands — B&D Controll-A-Door, Centurion, Merlin, Steel-Line, and Chamberlain — all share similar failure modes:
- Capacitor failure. Motor hums but won’t lift. Often $160-$240 to repair (capacitor + labour).
- Drive gear stripping. Internal nylon gear teeth shear off after 10,000+ cycles. Repair $220-$380 if the rest of the unit is healthy.
- Logic board failure. Motor won’t respond to remote, keypad or wall button. Repair $260-$480 depending on board availability; sometimes the cheaper path is a full opener replacement.
- Capacitor + relay failure. Common on B&D Tri-Tran and older Merlin units. Often pushes you to a full replacement.
When to repair, when to replace
Repair if:
- The opener is under 8 years old.
- One specific component has failed (capacitor, relay, gear).
- Genuine spare parts are still available for your model.
- The remote and keypad still work fine.
Replace if:
- The opener is over 12 years old.
- It’s started doing two or three different things wrong (gear, capacitor, board).
- The brand has been EOL’d and parts aren’t held in Australia.
- You want to upgrade to Wi-Fi / smart-home features anyway.
A new mid-spec smart opener installed runs $480-$780 — often comparable to a major board-and-gear repair on an old unit, with a 5-7 year warranty on the new install vs 90 days on the repair.
Brand-specific notes
- B&D is the dominant brand in older Adelaide builds. Genuine parts are well-stocked through B&D’s authorised network. Most repairs are economic.
- Centurion is the typical mid-2000s and newer brand on builder-pack houses. Parts availability is good; older sliding-rail Centurion openers (CD-XR series) are now EOL and replacement is the recommended path.
- Merlin ranges across budget (Tri-Tran, MR550) to premium (Pro Plus, smart-home compatible). Premium models repair well; budget Merlins past 8 years often warrant replacement.
- Steel-Line sells matched-package doors and openers — repairs are usually best done through their authorised installer network.
- Chamberlain is the larger US-market brand showing up in newer installs; parts now well-supported in Australia.
What we’ll ask on the call-out
- Make and model of opener (sticker on the unit, usually inside the case)
- Symptom — humming, dead, intermittent, remote-only fault, keypad-only fault
- Age of the opener if known
- Whether the door itself has any new faults (off-track, cable, springs)
The technician arrives with the diagnostic tools and the most-common-fault parts — which gets most repairs done in a single visit.
