Centurion is the third-most-common Adelaide garage door opener brand, particularly strong in newer estates from the late 2000s onwards. The South-African-origin brand has a reputation for rugged builder-spec gear and a solid Adelaide service network.
Common Centurion opener faults
CD-XR series (older, sliding-rail)
Symptoms: drive sprocket wear, slow operation, eventually intermittent failure to lift.
The CD-XR sliding-rail design has been EOL’d. Parts availability is dropping. Most CD-XR repairs in the $280–$400 band push toward full opener replacement.
CD8 / CD12 (mid-2010s to current)
Standard chain-drive openers. Capacitor and gear are the typical 8-12 year faults.
Common fixes:
- Capacitor replacement: $160-$240
- Drive gear replacement: $220-$380
- Logic board: $260-$480
Centurion smart range (Wi-Fi enabled)
App-controlled openers. Generally reliable. Wi-Fi connectivity is the unique-to-smart fault mode.
Common fixes:
- Wi-Fi pairing reset: often free with another service
- App update / firmware: usually self-resolving
- Capacitor (still ages out at 10+ years): $160-$240
Pairing a Centurion remote
Standard procedure for current Centurion openers:
- Locate the “Set” or “Learn” button on the motor unit (rear or top, varies).
- Press and hold for 1-3 seconds (model-specific). The opener LED illuminates.
- Within 30 seconds, press the new remote button until LED confirms.
- Release the Set button. Test.
For older CD-XR / CD-CT models:
- Set button usually visible without opening the housing.
- Hold for 3 seconds, then release.
- Press remote button briefly.
- Pairing confirmed by LED change.
For smart range:
- Open the Centurion app (or paired smart-home app).
- Add Device > Remote.
- Follow in-app pairing flow.
When to replace vs repair
- Replace if you have a CD-XR with any significant fault — parts dwindling, full replacement at $620-$780 with 5-year warranty often cheaper.
- Repair for CD8 / CD12 / smart range under 8 years old with single-component faults.
- Upgrade if you have a healthy non-smart Centurion and want app control — third-party smart hub ($180-$280) is the budget option.
Replacement opener compatibility
If you’re replacing a Centurion opener with a different brand:
- The motor mount, rail, and drive can usually be re-used if dimensions match.
- The remote pairing is brand-specific — your existing Centurion remotes won’t work with a B&D or Merlin replacement.
- The wall button is brand-specific too — usually replaced with the new opener.
