Sectional garage doors (also called panel-lift doors) are the modern standard for residential new builds and renovation projects across Adelaide. The door lifts in horizontal panels along curved tracks into the ceiling space, giving a flat, clean exterior and excellent insulation performance.
A new sectional door supplied and installed in Adelaide runs from about $2,400 (single, plain steel, basic motor) to $4,800+ (single, insulated polyurethane core, smart opener). Double sectionals start around $4,200. Custom timber-clad sectionals can reach $9,500-$15,000 depending on timber species and panel detailing.
Why a sectional door?
- Insulation. Polyurethane-foam-cored panels reach R-values of 2-3+ on premium products, against essentially zero for a single-skin roller. If your garage is integral to the house, this matters.
- Sealing. Modern sectional doors carry brush seals top and sides plus a bottom flexible weatherseal that compresses to the floor — far better against Adelaide’s red-dust easterlies than a roller.
- Aesthetic. Flat panels, recessed shadowlines, woodgrain prints, custom timber options. Front-of-house material in a way roller doors aren’t.
- Quiet. Tracked sectional doors are noticeably quieter than spring-tensioned roller doors, particularly on early-morning departures.
Sizing constraints
Sectional doors need 350-400mm of back-room (clearance from the opening into the ceiling space) for the curved tracks. If your ceiling is too low for that, you’re back to roller.
Standard residential opening widths:
- Single: 2,400mm or 2,700mm wide × 2,100-2,400mm tall
- Double: 4,200mm, 4,800mm or 5,000mm wide × 2,100-2,400mm tall
Custom widths are routine — the cost premium is more about the panel finish than the size.
Brand notes
- B&D — strongest Adelaide market position. Panelift Icon and Firmadoor ranges are typical residential picks.
- Steel-Line — broad colour range, good warranty, common in newer suburbs.
- Centurion / Taurean — premium-segment, particularly for double doors with smart openers.
The best brand for your job is usually the one your installer holds genuine parts for and warrants directly.
